Alright, I'm definitely going to have to give FMA a look! Thanks for convincing me, guys. hotorikun - Hahaha, I used 'trudging' because it's taking me so inexplicably long to get through a whole 6 episodes, but I am enjoying it! It's just a bit much at times, I feel like I need to be fully attentive/invested to get everything out of an episode. I can't just consume it like popcorn like I do with so many other anime. 2 episodes to go though! Vivace - Oh man, that SAO analysis was spot on from what I've listened to so far (about 15 minutes or so). I was fully expecting it to be some angry otaku raging about 'overhype' and 'the mainstream' but he actually brings up a lot of good, fair points. This is making me less and less tempted to watch the 2nd season, though xD I'm gonna have to disagree with you about SNK, though. I can't measure it up to FMA, of course, but I definitely don't think it failed on putting forth some fairly interesting philosophy and social commentary - and legitimately tried to make these things important, rather than just sprinkled them around in an effort to be edgy and dark. At the very least it took a good hard look at basic human nature in the face of mortal danger, which is something so many fantasy/sci-fi anime/videogames constantly forget or fail to do, likely because they're just so desensitized to the idea at this point. That alone had me pretty engaged. I can't say much on the pacing, though, since I didn't watch it as it was coming out. I literally had to stop myself from binging on the series and blowing through so many episodes a day, which is definitely saying something, haha.

It is pretty understandable how SnK attracts its audience, seen at its super high rating as one of the top 30 rated animes. However, for me it was unable for me to take the show seriously and it seems bland and boring most likely because at that point I've set my standards with shounen already too high. I've heard that the second season will cover the rest of the manga and I've heard the manga has been more serious and covered deeper topics. Perhaps the second season would change my mind. But for now, the current anime feels like a wannabe seinen. Looking at the winter list. WHERE IS MY NANOHA VIVID?!?! ;--; I want more Nanoha! And when is the third movie coming out?! It's almost been a year and a half since it had been announced! I really, really don't know if I want to watch Dog Days'', because the last two seasons had been such a giant snore fest and I only held in for Nana. urggghghgh Sai, here's another vid that would "totally" make you "want" to watch the second season of SAO, heh. www.youtube.com/watch?v=CHhebk70xRo

I've only read the manga, so I can't comment on how the two anime measure up, but FMA is soooo good. It's got so much heart and warmth to it. The characters are really what make it shine. The plot is great too, and it never feels like it's throwing the deeper ideas in your face or going for that 'look how philosophical I am!!!' angle.
Such a good series. ;___;
FLCL is hard to watch in one go, it's verrrry in-your-face. I watched 2 episodes a few weeks ago and I felt exhausted. I love the show though, it's so heartwarming. I love love love the soundtrack too.

^ Now I sort of feel bad for discarding FMA as a boring ol' shounen series all these years! It's definitely going right on my list of things to watch, then. I'm also quite liking FLCL's soundtrack - it's really different from what you usually get in anime. Some episodes feel straight up like they're meant to be a music video (Episode 2 especially, with one of my favourite scenes: Mamimi's fire ritual). "In-your-face" is as apt as I can think of to describe FLCL, haha.

There's a really underrated and overlooked anime this season, and most likely not too many here have watched it yet.
I present to you.. Danna ga Nani wo Itteiru ga Wakaranai Ken!
It's a 3 minute 4-koma panel type of anime, and up to the date of this post 11/13 episode have currently aired. It's about the relationship between a ordinary wife and an otaku husband. However, don't simply overlook the anime by this fact, for it actually loses its comedic effect as it progresses and becomes a bit serious, even!
Also, I LOVE. LOVE. LOOOOOOVE. This ending song. Sung by Tamura Yuki and also the male seiyuu.
Enjoy~ and just spend 30 minutes watching the whole thing. I promise you it won't disappoint.

I'm watching Girls und Panzer right now and its great. The historical references, and the details of the tanks are always spot on, and its very engaging, too.

Just finished Golden Time (finally) and started watching Yuuki Yuuna wa Yuusha de Aru. The first episode was pretty typical (though pretty!), but there's been quite a bit of buzz around it taking a Madoka-esque turn down the line, which has me intrigued. Anything inspired by Madoka is worth a gander.

Has anyone checked out the new animatorexpo.com site? It's a self funded site that consists of a lot of extremely high budget shorts said to be crowd funded and animated by studio duango and Kara. These shorts are magnificently beautiful, approximately 6 minutes each, and recently the third episode, Me!Me!Me!, had sparked a lot of talk on the web.
Just a little warning though, more than one of these shorts are indeed NSFW, if that's not your cup of tea. But they're so beautifully animated, you really can't not check these out!

I finally started Shinsekai Yori last night! I really like it, even from the first episode. Just the right amount of exposition, and the atmosphere and world-building is really well done. So intriguing so far, and has just the right amount of darkness and intrigue to it. I'm excited to watch more, thanks for the recommendation, hotorikun!

I'm so glad you like it! Let me know what you thought when you finish (or while watching, even)! I started reading the novel this week, actually, because I wanted to experience the story again. And I had the same experience you did with the first episode. Hopefully that feeling persists!

The anime is really, really gorgeous. The scene with Shun and Saki out on the boat in Episode 3 was beautiful, and the ending sequence is already one of my favourites ever.
I finished Episode 4, so we're finally getting to some exposition. All of it is really intriguing, if not a little confusing at first xD But I'm really enjoying it.

Sai , I'm really glad you're liking it! And when you say ending sequence, do you mean the ending theme? It became one of my favorites, too. It's a little...haunting, especially as it comes abruptly as things continue to happen. Also, upon your recommendation a while ago, I finally got around to watching Hourou Musuko last night. I was so impressed with it. Actually, once I get more time to mull it over, it might be one of my top five now. Every single character is so fleshed out despite it being an 11-episode anime. I felt so connected to all of them. I was a little disappointed by the ending, but I'm reading the manga now where the anime left off. Thank you sooo much for mentioning it here, else I wouldn't have known it even existed.

^ I'm so glad you liked Hourou Musuko! It's been on my mind a lot lately (probably because it was around this time last year that I watched it?) and I have nothing but fond memories for that series. Aaaand I finished Shinsekai Yori last night. Thank you so much for the recommendation - that was an incredibly beautiful anime, in so many ways. Definitely one of the most thought-provoking series I've ever seen - it went above and beyond what I'm used to from anime as far as social commentary and speculative thinking go. I can tell this is a series that's gonna stick with me for a while! I'd love to discuss the nitty gritty details, but I don't wanna drop spoilers for anyone who hasn't seen it, haha. I finished Persona 4 recently, so I've been watching Persona 4: The Animation. It's a fun adaptation, except for a few missteps here and there. I keep bouncing between watching the subbed version (because Yui Horie as Chie <3) and the dubbed version (because those are the voices I'm most used to after playing the game) xD;
