'Wish fulfillment' is a great way to describe SAO, because that's totally what it is, on almost every front. I do think the hype for SAO is a little bit out of control.
And for the record, I'm not someone who automatically dismisses anything with hype! Overly hyped anime like Attack on Titan and Madoka are among my absolute favourites, and I believe they totally deserve the hype they get. Some, on the other hand, not so much.
Hotorikun, I'm definitely going to check out Shin Sekai Yori! It sounds fascinating, and on MAL it's been compared to some great anime and amassed some great reviews.
I need to take the time to sit down and watch through the Madoka films. I've been craving that series a lot lately.

Madoka is definitely not a bad anime.
Just some more examples of hyped anime that are so deep and amazing: Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is absolutely spectacular and amazing. Hunter x Hunter is literally one of the best classic shounens out there. The 2011 remake is stunning.

^It was kind of awkward hearing Nana like that... lololol.
But I've already watched many sadistic sides of Nana's voice anyway. Yes, the anal rape/operation was too much. We really didn't need a scene showing her naked on a table with blood where her butt is.
Too many butts/tits in the first scene as well.
Like I said, I really don't see this show being any better than Valvrave lol.

Aaah I missed sharing in the FLCL love. That's in my top 10, easily. Such a gem of a show. It's so stylish and funny but it's got a real heart of gold. You're all so on the money with SAO, when I think of the people I know IRL who like it, and the people who dislike it, it's so true.
Eeeew, based on what you guys have said, I won't be watching Cross Ange. :/ That's.... euuughhht so unnecessary.
I've only been watching Sailor Moon Crystal, very nostalgic.

Cross Ange has been licensed by Crunchyroll so anyone in the North America region can stream it for free.

Eeeew, based on what you guys have said, I won't be watching Cross Ange. :/ That's.... euuughhht so unnecessary. No kidding. I'm watching Claymore one more time now, right after i watched both Ghost in the Shell series. I even bought it again on Bluray because it deserves HD, hehe. Its rather harsh and violent as well, but has many emotional and human moments. Its certainly among my favorite series such as Black Lagoon, Berserk, Neon Genesis, The Slayers, Basilisk, Witchblade, Rune Soldier, Gun x Sword, Cowboy Bebop, Record of Lodoss War. These are series i can always watch one more time and enjoy it.

Lol amelala, episode 2. I felt awkward listening to Nana performing in borderline hentai.
It's so funny how they "censor" nudity yet they flat out showed a person explode, gore and all, at the end.
Anyways, I'm also hanging in there cause Nana. Though I'm not giving this series higher than a 4 in my book, lol.

I'm watching Hunter x Hunter (2011) It's really good. Very exciting and hard to stop watching! A+++ would recommend. Haha, seems like liking Hunter x Hunter is getting a bit mainstream now, isn't it? The series definitely deserves all the praise it can get, (still not better than FMA:B), has some problems here and there, but all the cons can be almost covered by all the pros. Still my second favorite series of all time. >Maybe that'll change... I'm planning on watching Legend of the Galactic Heroes which I heard is brimming with amazement with its deep philosophy; I'll have high expectations for it.

Hmm, so much HxH praise! I feel like I should check it out but... 148 episodes sounds like a terrifying endeavor.
In a similar vein, I know some of you are FMA fans - one of my friends recently finished it and insisted that it was life-changing, haha. So I'm considering embarking on it. From my understanding, Brotherhood is a remake, no? Which one would you suggest I watch?
I'm not huge on shounen anime, except those that approach the genre a bit more critically (like SNK) or that have an interesting enough spin on it to make it interesting (like SAO... sort of. At first.)
In other news, I've started Log Horizon S2 and am still trudging through Fooly Cooly!

I generally hate Shounen series (especially the stuff Shonen Jump spews), but, FMA is definitely one of those series that is not overrated. it deserves its praise. Then again, I think SNK and SAO are overrated ^^" REGARDLSS, Brotherhood is the anime that follows the manga much more closely. If you're going to watch FMA, watch Brotherhood (alternatively you could read the manga). Also, HXH is actually a Shonen Jump series, but it does stuff better than all of their other titles. All of the characters have immense depth, and I'm only 31 episodes into it.
"trudging through Fooly Cooly" sounds like you don't like it! XD

Any of the popular genres, shounen, shoujo, mahou shoujo, are deeply broken once you have watched enough. Their title shows, example: Naruto, Nisekoi, Sailor Moon, in each genre respectively, are trite, boring, and an annoyance to a certain extent. However, what makes me want to watch more action shounen more lately? It's because of shows like FMA. (prepare for big walls of text cause I'm a hardcore otaku... T^T) What the 2003 version has is a very fleshed out first 25 episodes, full of humanization, characterization, something that the first 13 episodes of Brotherhood failed to achieve. However, why Brotherhood ultimately wins the majority of fan votes is because there was no filler and the story was overall 98% faithful to the manga adaptation (2% for the first episode being completely filler and details such as youswell coal mine left out, which was kinda ehhhhh, why did they even do that). With that being said, I recommend watching the first 3 to 4 episodes of the original 2003 series as the initial exposition as well as the flashback was done much better than FMA:B. However, past any more and it's just a plague of either filler, or the horrible, horrible filler plot that comes after. Blerrrrrrghgh. Shingeki no Kyojin is a failure on the part that it tries to be a seinen and be more "mature", but fails really badly. Why did FMA:B successfully deviate from shounen to seinen? It tackled very sensitive human philosophies. The philosophical references in FMA are immense, from Darwen's survival of the fittest (fleshed out by one of the greatest female characters in anime, I must say), to the beliefs of Imannuel Kant. That's not including the deep conflicts of the Ishval War as well as philosopher stone, which I'm not going to go into detail because I might as well just write a book. SnK doesn't have that deep of a philosophy, including with the terribly slow pacing, you have a show where the viewer is confused with, "am I suppose to take this seriously?" with no sense of urgency. I'm not even going to write anything about SAO because it doesn't deserve my criticism. I'm just going to leave this video here lolz. www.youtube.com/watch?v=3uON7ANNOi4Any show can have a big idea as their main theme, but are they mature enough to handle it? HxH is a whooole another game. Togashi, the mangaka, is a total otaku himself. He is a lazy genius. hot0rikun967, you have not even GOT to the best parts of HxH yet so prepare yourself. I really don't want to spoil it, but Togashi is one of the greatest writers of his time. Characterization is so subtle, he doesn't spoonfeed like Urobuchi, he is a total nerd (100% proven with Greed Island arc), and I could go about how great HxH is all day with its BRILLIANT, BRILLIANT, BRILLIANT, SUBARASHI character development, but I have work to do. Maybe I can write a whole post dedicated to HxH later on here. Oh god, I love the anime so much. Even though it has a seriousflaw in the later episodes, everything else makes up for it. And Killua is so cute.
