It's been a while to writing in the forum, yeah it was a fun experience listening together with groups of people. I will follow Stranger's grading standard to rate each songs in the album.
A rank = incredible/excellent B rank = above average C rank = average D rank = below average F rank = atrocious/poor
A+ rank: UNLIMITED BEAT
A rank: 君よ叫べ (Kimi yo sakebe)
A-/B+ rank: STAND UP! はつ恋 (Hatsukoi)
B rank: めぐり逢うすべてに (Meguriau subete ni) ALONE ARROWS 絶対的幸福論 (Zettaiteki Kofukuron)
B-/C+ rank: TWIST&TIGER GLORIA
C rank: Please Download Rock Ride Riot
C-/D+ rank: JEWEL WAKE UP THE SOULS
D rank: RODEO COWGIRL
Meguri has a special vibe as breaking the traditional shocking openers from the previous albums, but I'm not sure if I will listen regular basis. I didn't leave high expectation on UNLIMITED BEAT because usually those partially pre-leaked song used in game theme songs were kinda disappointed me before, wow... this song exceed way over my imagination. Overall, I'm very satisfied and her composing skills are continuously developing each time since Appassionato, love how she added another creative climax part or C-melo between second verse(jumping the chorus) and final chorus, well done!

Man, I can't express how much I love Please Download, haha, its easily in my top 3 for the album. The verses are some of the best melodically on the album for me, and the chorus is infectious as heck without being overly sweet sounding. The break down is super fun and the vocal processing just adds to the song for me, if not being a neutral feature. It reminds me of a song that someone else would put out, but I can't put my finger on who I'm thinking of.

I seem to be in the minority here, but I'll say it either way...I'm a little disappointed at this point. So far, I really like Zettaiteki Kofukuron and...that's about it. Other tracks I consider to be "good" are TWIST&TIGER (I wish this was a little longer), Meguriau subete ni, STARTING NOW! and UNLIMITED BEAT. Then there's okayish cuts like STAND UP!(this might grow on me) and Rock Ride Riot. All the rest are average or boring IMO. And most of all, I really dislike how they've mixed the Please Download! I usually hate that kind of autotune/voice altering effect on music. I already disliked it on Koi no Yokushiryoku -type EXCITER- but this is even worse case. However, I have a prediction that this song will improve immensely in live mode, when she most likely will sing the lines with her natural voice. And just to be clear, most often I pay attention to the music side the most, not the lyrical content, so they can't really help at this point, even if the lyrics were really good. Not just because of my lack of Japanese skills, even in other languages lyrics don't matter to me that much most of the time.

I get what you mean davidson. I must note that I think it's funny that you like Zettaiteki Kofukuron yet others seem to think it's very generic and not unique. I like the song a lot as well. She sings it with so much emotion. I glad there are songs you consider good, but I wish the rest would've been more fun for you. I get what you mean. Kimi Yo Sakebe seems to be one of Jason's fave, and I must say her vocals are good as always, but it's not doing much for me yet. It sounds like too much a rehash and a bend of NEXT ARCADIA+VIRGIN CODE+Appassionato. And I can even hear some Chinmoku No Kajitsu in it. But yeah. I do completely understand how you dislike Please Download's vocals. I feel it too. But I'm going to just see it in the way that they really wanted to display (They've exaggerated it...) the digital feel of the song. That way I can somehow accept it. And the live performance will probably be so much better. Maybe that performance will help you to like the studio version more, because Dream Rider's performance helped me like the studio version more too. (Hope the live performance won't make you dislike the song even more xD) I must say I do love the lyrics for this one. Yeah, if you look at it from the music side, the album isn't too impressive, with for me Meguri Au Subete Ni, Hatsukoi, TWIST&TIGER and Rock Ride Riot being my faves. (The latter just because I didn't expect Nana to have a song like this, since I could see this song right in Mamoru Miyano's discography) but for me lyrics in fact do matter, so that boosts some songs. davidson, would you say this album is better or worse than SUPERNAL LIBERTY? Because I'd much faster call this album SUPERNAL LIBERTY -part 2- than SMASHING ANTHEMS.

I get what you mean davidson . I must note that I think it's funny that you like Zettaiteki Kofukuron yet others seem to think it's very generic and not unique. I like the song a lot as well. She sings it with so much emotion. Yes, I love the emotion in her voice on that song as well. It also has a sweet, soothing melody that really gets me. Instrumental parts are also well done. I do completely understand how you dislike Please Download's vocals. I feel it too. But I'm going to just see it in the way that they really wanted to display (They've exaggerated it...) the digital feel of the song. That way I can somehow accept it. Yes, I understand the idea behind the decision to include that kind of vocal effect, but it doesn’t make the song better for me unfortunately. And the live performance will probably be so much better. Maybe that performance will help you to like the studio version more, because Dream Rider's performance helped me like the studio version more too. (Hope the live performance won't make you dislike the song even more xD) I can hardly imagine that being the case. That has never happened for me as far as I remember. It’s easy to bet that in addition to her live vocal performance, the live choreography for Please Download is going to be pure entertainment. That’s usually how things go with her dance songs, they’re fun to watch. davidson , would you say this album is better or worse than SUPERNAL LIBERTY? Because I'd much faster call this album SUPERNAL LIBERTY -part 2- than SMASHING ANTHEMS. This is easy to answer. It's definitely worse than SUPERNAL LIBERTY, at this point at least. Actually, I really like that record. After seeing Live Flight versions of some of the songs: Antique Nachtmusik and FATE, particularly. Funny how I seem to be the only one here that really likes FATE. Maybe not the most original song ever but the melody and Nana’s vocal performance together make that song for me (and her live performance from Yokohama Stadium springs to my mind every time I listen to that song). In addition to the aforementioned tracks, songs like VIRGIN CODE, GUILTY, Appassianato, Fun Fun People, Setsuna Capacity and Ladyspiker stand out for me. Only Rock you baby! and Ai no hoshi –two hearts- rendition (I love the original!) don’t reach my high level standards. And I’m sorry to say that I don’t quite hear the SUPERNAL LIBERTY similarities with NEOGENE CREATION. I see it like this. Closest in structure and style to SUPERNAL LIBERTY is the predecessor, ROCKBOUND NEIGHBORS. Epic openings (Avalon no oukan vs. VIRGIN CODE), Aufwachen forms (Synchrogazer vs. Vitalization), Towel songs at the end part of the album (Happy☆Go-Round! vs. Rock you baby!), ballad closures (Yakusoku vs. Ai no Hoshi -two hearts-) and overall, both have kind of similar rocking/harder sound. And in addition to that, I feel that SMASHING ANTHEMS has similar kind of vibe with those albums too. NEOGENE CREATION feels a little bit different for me at this point – it begins with a power ballad for starters. In principle, that’s a good thing after three kinda similar records. I only wish the songs were more memorable.

Hey, you're not alone! I like FATE a lot too! (People, please stop calling this song generic ;___;) And I understand what you feel about ROCKBOUND NEIGHBORS and SUPERNAL LIBERTY being simular.
NEOGENE CREATION is quite out there, isn't it...? I don't think it's as formulaic as that SL and SMASHING ANTHEMS felt though. And I see that as a good thing. They were trying to hard to make SL and SA simular to RN. But I love SL a lot and SA too, even though that one feels a little transparent by now. Like, it had 4 singles on it and they didn't have much space nor the time to be very creative. I mean we got The NEW STAR and I think that's one of the more unique songs on it. And Never Let Go and Koiuta. are just my baes. But the rest... I don't listen to that often anymore? Sometimes BRACELET and Ego Ideal but that's it.
Yeah, I get what you mean. Maybe they'll grow on you more. The first part of the album did leave a good impression on me, I can see the creativity in these songs. I can easily recall the melodies of them, but starting from WAKE UP THE SOULS, it becomes quite the challenge... Only heard the album twice, so that's probably why. I can't form my opinion in just two listens though. I will give myself some time to listen to the songs, and when I'm ready, I'll write a review of NEOGENE!
My CDJapan order (which has my copy of NEOGENE) arrived in my country's customs, so if it leaves the customs today, I will probably receive it tomorrow! *praying intensifies*

It's being reported she landed at #2 weekly for Oricon, with 47,000~ sales. Which is nice, because the #3 spot was right on her behind her: アルバム *1 66.8万 SMAP *2 *4.7万 水樹奈々 *3 *4.5万 ユーリ!!! on ICE
That's about 14,000 copies down from Smashing Anthems. Just about the sales I expected, so not a bad result! Actually, had she released the album last week, she would've got #1. Instead, her sales look so small compared to SMAP...

Finally listened to the whole album last night! I thought it was a pretty stellar release, though the amount of new material was both a blessing and a curse, haha. It was great getting a large influx of Nana music all at once, but it also made it so that the songs didn't quite stand out as much (with some exceptions, of course). Not that this will be a problem once I've looped the album a few more times!
I'm going to listen a few more times before posting a definitive ranking, but just from a first impression my favourites for the moment are Meguri Au Subete ni, STAND UP!, Please Download, GLORIA, Kimi yo sakebe and Zettai teki. I looove that she opened and ended the album with two rock-inspired ballads, that was such a fresh approach for Nana! I also surprisingly enjoyed Rock Ride Riot and WAKE UP THE SOULS. Songs like JEWEL, Hatsukoi, ALONE ARROWS, UNLIMITED BEAT and TWIST&TIGER were all good for what they were but felt like they had been done before. Good songs, but didn't "wow" me. ...And then let's not talk about RODEO COWGIRL and STARTING NOW!, lol.
I really enjoyed listening to it, though. Like SA, the first 3 songs really wowed me, and I've already listened to them a bunch. I feel like NC does a great job of maintaining its energy throughout the entire record - it feels like one of the least mellow albums Nana's ever done, despite the amount of ballads.
All in all, that was a very good album and I'm excited to explore it further and have it grow on me. I'm also excited for whatever Nana releases next! I'll admit that 2016 deflated my Nana fanaticism a little bit, with Rensou Hanabi being the only good thing to come out of it (until now), so here's hoping Nana has a productive and inspired 2017!

Reading this thread liking every post sevenpetals makes about how absolutely perfect Please Download is. I'll have my review up in a few days.

I'll come up with a more formal "review" when I get a chance, I've had time to let things settle at this point.

My CDJapan package got lost in my homecountry. Somehow Post.NL (the organization that delivers normal and international packages in The Netherlands) fucked up. Sounds like they were acting pretty lazy and reckless. They messaged me on Twitter that the package seems to have been returned to Japan "probably because of an unscanable barcode". So yeah. Great.
Because of that, I'm too lazy to wait for my ratings. I'll just update my review of the album when my physical copy finally arrives so I can talk in depth about the songs, rate the album design, the photobook and the DVD content.
Gonna use Stranger's ranking method as well, it's a very nice system and makes it easier to rate them that way! So, with all that being said, NEOGENE CREATION rating time, start!
A rank = incredible B rank = above average C rank = average D rank = below average F rank = atrocious
A rank: めぐり逢うすべてに / Meguri Au Subete Ni ALONE ARROWS TWIST&TIGER はつ恋 / Hatsukoi
A-/B+ rank: STAND UP! Rock Ride Riot 絶対的幸福論 / Zettaiteki Kofukuron
B rank: Please Download UNLIMITED BEAT
B-/C+ rank: WAKE UP THE SOULS STARTING NOW! RODEO COWGIRL 君よ叫べ / Kimi Yo Sakebe
C rank: JEWEL
D rank: GLORIA

ℓoro If it makes you feel better, I'm also waiting for my physical copy of NC! Did you order through CDJapan too? The poster there is cool, so it's worth the wait. I ordered from Amazon.co.jp. No tokuten, but much cheaper and arrived on the day it was released! Not that I've taken too much advantage of that, since I watched the DVD once and put it back since.
