So, among the gamers here, is there anyone else who tends to fall hopelessly in love with a game's music? What are some games that have stellar OSTs for you?
For me, definitely anything by Nobuo Uematsu. Seriously. I listen to all the FF soundtracks from 1-10 regularly because ohmygod that man is a genius. My favourites, though, would have to be 6, 7, 8, and 9. And that was actually really hard to pick :^^;
Other winners are definitely Chrono Trigger and Cross. Trigger has an amazing soundtrack throughout and Cross gets special mention for Time's Scar, which is potentially one of my favourite pieces of music ever.
And for the slightly more obscure - I find Motoi Sakuraba's soundtracks to be waaay too similar to one another, except for in the case of Baten Kaitos, which has an awesomely atmospheric and sometimes haunting OST. Kenji Ito's work on Seiken Densetsu is definitely worth mention, as is Ryuji Sasai's work on FF: Mystic Quest (one of the few things people agree the game did right...)

Of course I love Nobuo Uematsu! Although it isn't my favourite in the series at all, I think I love the soundtrack to FFVIII the most. Some of my favourites are in FFIX though - You're Not Alone, Rose of May (and Protecting my Devotion), Black Mage Village and so on. I think my favourite FF song is FFVII's Main Theme, it's full of so many emotions for me. While it has a lot of updated versions and arrangements, the original is still my favourite - www.youtube.com/watch?v=6UARM4q7hHU - when it all comes together around the 3:10 mark -shudders- I wander around aimlessly on disk one, just for this! I think this might be my favourite in Chrono Trigger: www.youtube.com/watch?v=RqZaFDA7PXY I like world map music, don't I? I've never played Chrono Cross in full, mainly because of it's lack of PAL release, and it's a pain to emulate, I have started it though. Actually, I don't think I've ever finished Chrono Trigger either... I just cannot do Death Peak... and I need what's at the top if you know what I mean! Motoi Sakuraba was in ToS? I remember not liking the soundtrack to that much, it had some stand out tracks, but most were a bit average. I think my favourite track was the instrumental opening they used instead of Starry Heavens in the English language versions. I don't even know who composed that! This tracks is badass though, Kratos' theme + battle music? Yes please! www.youtube.com/watch?v=mpt9oO7rX-M I don't know which one of the two composers did what for this game though. Of course, like everyone, I think Fatalize is awesome! I ADORE Tenpei Sato's work, he did the compositions for Disgaea, La Pucelle Tactics, Phantom Brave, and so on... He is able to write hilarious vocal tracks, really bizarre songs for demons, stuff that is just plain weird too. Phantom Brave just has it's own totally unique sound. However, some of the tracks are breathtakingly beautiful too, I'll post some examples for those who haven't played the games. Eternal Melody (Disgaea: Hour of Darkness), Akai Tsuki (Disgaea series): Phantom Brave tracks: The End of this Passionate Feeling, Angel Breathand some of the weird/bizarre/wtf is this tracks: Lord Laharl's Hymn (Disgaea: HoD) Etna Rock (Disgaea: Cursed Memories), there's also a jazzy version from HoD called Etna Boogie!! and Welcome to the Overlord's Castle (Disgaea: HoD): There are so many examples for this... After Nobou Uematsu though, my queen is Michiko Naruke who composed for the Wild Arms series until the 4th game, she did all of the compositions for WA1-WA3, and some of WA4, she stopped due to illness. Here are some of her best (mostly from WA3 haha), the two 10th Anniversary arrangement albums are amazing: To the End of the Wilderness/ Piano Version (WA1), Zed's Theme/ Rearrangement (WA1), Battle vs. Lord Blazer (Rearrangement) (WA2) - original is a bit bland, Battle vs. Liz and Ard (original for the lulz) (WA2)/ Rearrangement - how they got this from the original I'll never know!! I love Wild Arms 3 so much, thousands of examples I could pick!! Seems someone has uploaded a condensed version of the whole OST! www.youtube.com/watch?v=rHqGdaw7P5M, www.youtube.com/watch?v=PsFCp1Ky4qo and so on, I recommend it so much! Interestingly, for WA5, there are instrumental tracks by Noriyasu Agematsu, the Elements Garden guy who composes for Nana Here are some of his tracks that I especially liked: On The Day The Shovel Was Named Invincible and Crossing Over the Sorrowful Land (my favourite track in the game, word map music #4!!). He also did the main battle theme: When the Heart Ignites, which is alright. tl;dr I love Wild Arms and Tenpei Sato. AND I DIDN'T EVEN GET STARTED ON THE PERSONA 3/4 OSTs! D:

I'm luke warm on the FF series post-NES, but it does indeed have great soundtracks. FF6 is definitely my fav soundtrack in the series
CT had such a great soundtrack. The settings in the game all differed from each other greatly, and the soundtrack was varied to match. Who didn't get the chills when they first stepped into Enhasa and heard the theme? The music was not only great, it all fit perfectly into the actual setting. The black wind howls...
I like how you mention CC just for one song. Pretty much an OK to pretty decent soundtrack, propelled into greatness for one song
Motoi Sakuraba... he did Tales and Star Ocean series, right? Never played SO, loved ToP's soundtrack (and the game itself, hehe) and ToS had an OK soundtrack. OK with a few really nice songs
FF:MQ, people laugh when I tell them it has a good soundtrack. The game itself discolours their taste of the game so hard that they tend to not notice how nice the music is. Though half the songs are a variation on one theme, lol
While we're namedropping game composers, how 'bout Koichi Sugiyama and his work with the Dragon Quest series. Always very bright and joyful themes with some beautiful melodies sprinkled in. DQ3 is my favourite (both gamewise and musicwise).
As for myself, I'll just name a couple of Capcom games: Mega Man - 1-7, 9, 10 (haven't played 8), X1 X2 X3. Those are the ones I've played and they have amazing soundtracks. Especially Sparkman from MM3 and Ballade's theme from MM10 (I never got the DLC levels, I just know the songs). The X series is so good
Phoenix Wright <3
(non Capcom) VVVVVV and Super Meat Boy both have incredible sound tracks

Come to think of it... Sakura Taisen song box also counts as OST... And it's sitting in my playlist for quite some time now, actually even longer than Nana herself ;D Most of the songs are not the ones you'll want to loop, but they work nicely as fillers between key songs which you'll rarely want to skip. Most of the songs has nice retro sound. I'm not really into music without vocal, so I don't listen to OSTs usually, but this thing is actually 8 CDs full of songs ;D Needless to say very few of them actually were in games and even those who had that chance worked as minus vocal BGMs. As for examples... Well here's one of my best of the best slow songs www.youtube.com/watch?v=JxwcIFkraUUFits the season even =) Hanasaku Otome :love www.youtube.com/watch?v=zk3-hf332WQOh well I'm not gonna link all of them, really ;D

I like how you mention CC just for one song. Pretty much an OK to pretty decent soundtrack, propelled into greatness for one song To clarify, I just gave Time's Scar a special mention since that song is just insanely good, but I do actually have a lot of tracks from that OST that I love ;D. Jellyfish Sea, People Imprisoned by Destiny, Dreams of the Shore near Another World, Time of the Dreamwatch, Lost pieces, Radical Dreamers <3 etc. Also, the Megaman series seriously does have such catchy themes. @ relmy - The FFVII main track is one of my favourites too. It's one of the most atmospheric pieces of video game music ever I've liked what I've heard so far of the WA1 soundtrack, nothing's stood out too much (well, the Curan Abbey bgm did, but... not because I liked it :^^; ). And those Noriyasu tracks from WA3 are awesome

Aside from Into the Wilderness (one of my top vgm tracks~) I'm not the biggest fan of the WA1 OST, people say it's the best one, but eh, I think it's aged really badly. I didn't play the remake, so I'm not familiar with the updated versions. For WA1, my most played tracks are piano/rock 10th anniversary arrangements The Abbey song is terrible in all forms, the original, the remake, the piano version. UGH. I fail to understand how the same woman who wrote and created great RPG music that managed to both conform to it's genre, but be so far away from it because it captured the Western setting so well, made Abbey, and most of the WA1 OST. A bit off, but I finally watched the Wild Arms anime, totally different composers to the games, OST was forgetabble. Ending song is THE WORST SONG I have ever heard. Nevertheless, in the final episode they gained some sense and had Naruke make this masterpiece, it kinda counts... it's on a CD with all the game vocal tracks? And I loved it before I watched the series. www.youtube.com/watch?v=lIh6-LLcD4M(I STAN THIS SERIES SO HARD GUYS)

Just had to mention that I attended the Distant World concert last week! Which is, for those who don't know, a touring philharmonic orchestra that plays Final Fantasy music <3 It was absolutely amazing. I totally cried like seven times, haha.

Haha, this thread.
You should listen to DotA 2's main OST theme and Counter Strike- Global Offensive's main OST theme as well. Valve, the company that is infamous for making games such as Counter Strike, Half-Life, Team Fortress, and many notorious gaming titles, does a fantastic job in making beautiful cinematic trailers and orchestral soundtracks.
