I thought this might be a popular thread since a lot of people have gotten into Nana from Nanoha. I've only watched the first season and found it pretty awesome for a Magical Girl anime, but wasn't too impressed with it otherwise ^^; I'm sure there are bigger fans here though who can discuss it. :3

I'm one of the few that enjoyed the third season the most. The characters have really grown on to me by then, and I also like grown-up Nanoha better than loli Nanoha ww Fate is adorable be she a little girl or a grown-up.
Be this a Nana forum, there's probably no need to mention who is my favorite character, right? XD

I'm more of a die-hard Nanoha fan than a Fate fan, no offense to our Lady. Of all the seasons I love A's the most, and I kinda liked the Original Series the least. It drags too much in my opinion, though it's very much improved by the Movie.
Can't wait for the A's 2nd Movie~!!

I made quite a long review on Nanoha back in the day, but I'm too lazy to translate it so just a few words =)
First of all, Nanoha series is NOT maho-shoujo. 1st season has some elements, but it's still ordinary shounen. 2nd and 3rd season got rid even from those elements. Main theme of shoujo (and maho-shoujo is still shoujo) anime is first love. No love - no shoujo. There are more signs of the genre of course, but that's a must. And there's no love in Nanoha (well, I'm not supporting NanoFate =)) - just friendship. Friendship is one of the main focuses of shounen genre btw. So Nanoha is not actually maho-shoujo, just like Madoka, which is drama. But that's another story =)
As for seasons... 1st season is really strange - plot is advancing very fast but the actual show feels overextended. That's because they dedicated too much screen time on unimportant scenes and rushed key ones. That was fixed in a movie, which was not only epic, but the best adaptation I've ever seen! Not only they managed to keep all the key scenes, but they actually added new ones! So I advice everyone who wants to start Nanoha to skip 1st season and just watch the movie instead - you won't miss a thing.
2nd season is made of win. From the start to the very end. So for those who has high expectations of the 2nd movie - you WILL be dissapointed. It's just impossible to fit A's in a 2h movie. Simply impossible.
3rd season is a fail... Really, when I found out that it had 26 series I thought - wow finally! Now they can spend more time on character development and background! But duh... It's actually starting from 17th episode - everything before is just a tasteless bubble-gum. And Fate became too soft =\ I was even thinking of dropping it... Ending was pretty intense though. 3rd season can be compressed in a movie just fine I think.
Btw, my favorite character is Fate of course (from 1st and 2nd season, grown up Fate is just too kind, I heard they are fixing it in Force, but I don't read manga - maybe they'll make anime after all...), but my 2nd one in a list is Vita and not Nanoha. Nanoha is pretty straight forward tbh - "shoot first, make friends later" and all =) Everything is easy for her since she has so much built in power and Vita is weak, but still fighting, getting her ass kicked just to get up and fight again. Way to go! =)

I think there's a difference between shounen magical girl and shojo magical girl. Both are magical girl, but have totally different focuses.
Then there's magical girl like Utena and Madoka which are just a massive finger to both ends of the genre...
Uhm... I didn't like Nanoha much, couldn't get past episode 4 or so. I might try it again, but Nanoha just annoyed me so much.

You mean like Super Man? Madoka is arguable I don't consider it maho-shoujo as I already mentioned, but Utena being a maho-shoujo is really something new ... Watch the movie. It's short and gives all you need to know about plot and heroines. Nanoha is pretty evil btw =)

^ no, I mean that it's a series where the lead is a female who has magical transformation powers. In shojo magical girl there is usually a love plot and formulaic action, shounen magical girl usually lacks the romance and more like Nanoha with more focus on action.
Utena is considered magical girl. It's a genre deconstruction of shojo magical girl. It takes all the obvious elements - a girl who transforms, a love plot, stock footage and a formula for battles. It takes character types typical to magical girl - the hero (i.e. Tuxedo Mask type character), the magical girl, the enemy group, the bitch (can't think of another name lol), and heavily subverts them.
Madoka is the same kind of thing for shounen magical girl, but minus the surrealism and allegory. It doesn't do it to the same extent - it's not long enough to explore all the character types - but it does a good exploration of the problem of "magical girl" in itself.

Uhm... I didn't like Nanoha much, couldn't get past episode 4 or so. I might try it again, but Nanoha just annoyed me so much. Same, to be honest. I didn't find Nanoha or Fate, for that matter, to be particularly compelling, but Nanoha was a little much. That being said, I might actually watch the movie if it's as much of an improvement as you guys say. I loved the climactic parts of the 1st season, especially the Take a shot scene, so I'd imagine they'd be even more epic in movie form. :good

And how many other "shounen maho-shoujo" do you know? Nanoha is pretty unique. And not mahou shoujo of course. You can easily replace the characters with the ones form, say, Dragonballz and won't see a difference =) The fact that there's a transforming girl present in a show doesn't make it maho-shoujo by default. Like a soldier in a movie doesn't make it an action. What's wrong with her? She's a bit simple and not very interesting as a character but why hate her? There's an overly epic Don't be long scene but I guess it's more epic if you watched the whole series already and liked it =) And this thread definitely needs more Fate in it :love

I never said I hated her, but yes, she is overly simple and largely uninteresting, as opposed to Fate who I found marginally more interesting and marginally less simple. Again, this is all going off impressions I got from the 1st Season, so feel free to tell me how zomgawesome they become in the subsequent ones or whatever As for the things I did enjoy about the series, as I said before I loved the climax set to Take a shot, it made me love the song a lot more. Every anime should have equally epic music playing during their respective climaxes ;D I enjoyed that it wasn't quite as formulaic as the typical Magical Girl show, it was refreshing. I'm glad they avoided the whole "monster-of-the-day" trap that a lot of anime tend to fall in to.

Wow thanks so much for saying Nanoha as as a chara is overly simple and largely uninteresting >>. If you guys watched Triangle Hearts or read the mangas, you'd understand more about her.
Nanoha being evil is pretty much an exaggeration from the fans, with the White Devil nickname was also fan-given.But then again its your opinion soo...
MSLN is pretty much the spawn of Magical Girl shows and Gundam, but that's what makes it different from the rest xD Seriously, can't wait for Movie 2nd to come.

As I said, I fully understand that if I pursued the other seasons/mangas/whatever else is in the Nanoha franchise, I'd probably end up eating my words and gladly so. But again, these are my impressions from the 1st season, so take it with a grain of salt.

Like what? Tell us. Maybe we already know but don't consider it complex enough =) Well, Nanoha is the only character from first 2 seasons (can't say about 3rd, since large part of its characters left undeveloped) who actually wants to defeat her opponents and nuke them down into the depths of oblivion before thinking about some long term goals
