I partially started this thread because I'm curious to see what kind of anime you all tend to like for summer, and also because I'm desperately looking for recommendations, haha. I love me some summer-themed series to watch during vacation, and I've yet to find one for this year!
I tend to enjoy ones that are slightly more mature and big on summery atmosphere - i.e., AIR, Ano Hana, Ano Natsu, etc. - Not overly dramatic, but not gratingly fluffy either. But if there's any other anime you watched that worked really well with summer without being explicitly about summer, feel free to list those too!

Have you seen the film Summer Wars? It's by the director who did The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, and though it isn't as good, but it's fun with a substantial enough plot. Ghibli's Only Yesterday is a nice nostalgic summer film too, or Whisper of the Heart... any of their drama films, really. They're always worth rewatching too!
Maybe Noein: Mou Hitori no Kimi e? It's pretty dark in places but it's set in the summer holidays (it starts with a summer ghost hunt). The drama/school friend parts are almost better than some of the sci-fi parts, and the humour is balanced nicely with the drama to stop it ever getting too oppressive. The humour also works well to make it more tragic though.

amelala - I'm planning on starting SAO 2 very soon! I'm nearly done Log Horizon, which is also in the same vein as those two. relmy - I love Summer Wars and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. Aside from both of them being really interesting, they both offer some seriously beautiful scenery. I sort of like Summer Wars a bit more than TGWLPT, though I only came to this conclusion recently after rewatching both; the sci-fi/videogame-esque motifs and the themes/commentary on one's connections to others (a very intimate family vs. the extreme way in which we're all connected today via internet and so on) and on social media (and the dangers of it) and the exploration of the traditional, matriarchal family ( very similar to my own) all really resonated with me. Absolutely one of my favourite films! I haven't watched those Ghibli ones though, surprisingly enough, so I'll have to give them a look, for sure. I heard about Noein a couple of days ago, actually, but read that the plot was inconsistent/convoluted, but from what you've said it sounds pretty good. @vívace - Just looked that one up; it seems surprisingly endearing! And tickles my inner Harvest Moon fan, so that might be something to check out I started Tokyo Magnitude 8.0, which... okay, technically takes place during summer, but otherwise isn't very summery or fun, at all, haha. I highly recommend it though; I'm only on episode 2 and it's caused serious heart ache for the characters, who I've pretty much instantly connected with which is rather impressive! I don't know if I'll make it through to the end, since it apparently gets so much more emotional, haha. Thank you for the recommendations!!

Yeah the plot for Noein is very convoluted and ridiculous, but if you just go along with it and try not to figure it out it works so well as a framing device for the interpersonal relationships in the series, which is what the show really excels in. I think whether you find it detrimental to the overall series will depend on how much you like the characters, because that's the strong point, imo. I should re-watch Summer Wars! I've only seen it once, while I've seen TGWLTT 3/4 times (saw it in my first year of uni in anime soc, we then showed it every year after that because it's good for first week/first film showing), maybe I'll like Summer Wars more on a second watch.

Speaking of re-watch and second watches, the third season of Kuroshitsuji (Black Butler) is out! Go check it out!
If you haven't watched the first season of Kuroshitsuji yet, to enjoy this third season would be to watch the first 15 episodes of the first season and then come back to watch the third season, because that's where the main plot of the manga is. It deviates from the manga storyline after the middle of the first season, kind of like Fullmetal Alchemist.
If you like Victorian style aesthetics, supernatural elements, and action scenes, this would be for you!
