Okay, so I have two questions I'd like to discuss! One: What would you consider to be Nana's timeless hits? and Two: What would you consider to be Nana's most recent hit?
To get into the nitty-gritty, let's define a "hit" as something beyond just physical sales - though those should also be considered - and obviously beyond personal preference. Things to consider would be tie-ins, general fandom receptiveness to the song, the amount of times Nana performs it (and how the audience receives it), popularity at karaoke bars, "special" performances (Kouhaku, etc.), things Nana may have said about the song, etc.
I'm mostly curious about her most recent hit, since all of her songs lately have been doing pretty well, and I'm not sure if there's been one that's really risen above & beyond with the Nana fandom.

I think some obvious hits are Eternal Blaze, Innocent Starter, Phantom Minds, Power Gate, Zankou no Gaia.
Some recent hits include Bright Stream, Preserved Roses, and Kakumei Dualism. Those last 2 are very popular in Japan (for some reason, lol) esp. in Karaoke. Might consider Synchrogazer as well, at least I would.
Of those 3 recent hits im really only a fan of Bright Stream though, haha...

sevenpetals really hit the nail on the head with ETERNAL BLAZE, Innocent Starter, PHANTOM MINDS, POWER GATE, and Zankou no Gaia. Umm. Are there others? Despite its sales and popularity, I'm not sure I'd consider BRIGHT STREAM a hit as of yet. PHANTOM MINDS seems to cement itself as the "First to #1, Kouhaku, Nanoha" single, with BRIGHT STREAM as a follow up. I could be wrong. To be honest, I've stayed away from concert track lists of which I don't have the blu rays, and so if she played the song at Circus, Winter Festa, and Flight, then maybe it is a classic hit by now? I'd also include Shin'ai in the list of classics given it was the first Kouhaku song and it's so important to Nana--that and it's sort of become the quintessential Nana ballad. If Zankou no Gaia is also included, I think Orchestral Fantasia also deserves a nod because it, too, has been sung at Animelo and is a very popular concert song. So I'd either include Orchestral Fantasia or remove Zankou no Gaia. Someone should argue against Orchestral Fantasia because I think it's wishy-washy! (We should formalize a list after the discussion!) Umm. Shichigatsu Nanoka? Anyone wanna argue for that one? Idunno. I like this thread! Anyway, I'd definitely add Shin'ai.
EDIT: Discotheque. Herp derp. That was like THE reason "Trickster" made it to #2, and it's a near must-have in concerts. I do have a question about Astrogation though. The audience loves when its played, and often its very emotional. Hit? Idunno.

i not so sure abt Zankou no Gaia can be counted as a hit, but within the fans, yes is a hit to them, but to the unknown unsure, but i can confirm nanoha songs are a timeless hits. during Live viewing in Singapore, we realize there some not really fan of Nana, they are more on anime fans, so when ETERNAL BLAZE start they go hyper mode ^^;;;; then other songs like meh >.>;;
recent hits Preserved Roses, and Kakumei Dualism.....the whole live viewing go max mode when this music start =.=;;;

Yeah, I'm not convinced on Zankou no Gaia either, I don't think it has the mass appeal of EB, IS etc...
I think Discotheque wins over Astrogation simply because it was popular, but it also got those duet performances for a while in 2012 with the girl from AKB48. If you're performing it on music shows a few years later, I'd class it as a hit.
Shin Ai is definitely a fan favourite and has the Kouhaku performance, so I definitely count it as a hit, POP MASTER is the other Kouhaku song but I don't really think that's a hit (what a waste of Kouhaku!)
I think PR/KD have to be classed as hits too, she's performed them a Kouhaku, FNS, music shows, there was a good amount of promo. They hit all the hit targets!

Probably basing on the ranking in Nana Festa and my own opinion. Definitely Shin Ai, Innocent Starter, Power Gate, Eternal Blaze, Wild Eyes, and Discoqethe. (Spelled it wrong xD)
It seems as though Pray, Ai no Hoshi, and Zankou no Gaia are also as popular but not as notable.
Medium popular I would say are Phantom Minds and Preserved Roses, cause of their "first" in placement and collaboration I would assume.

Yeah, I'd classify songs like Zankou no Gaia, Orchestral Fantasia, and Astrogation as more like "inside" hits, within the fandom. I'm actually kind of tempted to throw POWER GATE in there too, if only because I don't hear about it or see its name thrown around all that much when Nana's discussed (maybe because it's less anisong-y and more generic pop, though). I'm kind of curious about how that one became a concert staple - did Nana just end up enjoying the energy and the crowd's reaction, or did she just keep performing it until the fans began to associate it with her concerts and got excited? Haha. I always end up wondering that for every song that eventually becomes a staple. I completely forgot about Shin Ai and DISCOTHEQUE! Yes, I think those would definitely count. relmy brought up a good point - there's something to be said for a song that endures and pops up on music shows years after its release. I know Secret Ambition pales in comparison to the other two Nanoha OPs, but where do you guys think that one would fall? (Also, the fact that Kakumei Dualism may be considered a hit is a bit... Ehhhh. /personal bias )

Personally..... Phantom Minds will always be my favorite. I actually aren't too fond of eternal and power; I'm just not a fan of slow pop and extremely poppy tunes like Disco. However... I love Super Generation. That reminds me that nobody had actually said that was a bit or anything yet heh XD I love Nanas symphonic hard rock songs because I love those genres... Like vita and synchro and especially VIRGIN CODE. Also anything that sounds folk like Risouron is also a big favorite of mine. Next Arcadia too. Sadly they aren't "hits" but at least I've seen them acknowledged by the fandom.

I think you'd have to go for BRAVE PHOENIX before SG, or they'd at least be equal. It's a semi-staple with the Nanoha appeal too.
Personally, Secret Ambition is my favourite of the Nanoha openings. ETERNAL BLAZE is always going to be in concerts though, and it still gets the odd performance too, so it's the biggest hit of the Nanoha OPs imo. It's her main staple song, it's not everyones favourite, and I don't think it has the mass appeal of DISCOTHEQUE... but it's THE Nana song. #1 staple is probably better than 'hit' for it.
Innocent Starter I'd class as the breakout song, she improved from her debut but it's after IS the gears are really set in motion. Pray is a firm fan fave too.

It's so interesting how songs become staples. I mean, being as objective as I can, there isn't really anything... special... about ETERNAL BLAZE? I mean, I love it to pieces, and she sounds incredible when she performs it, but it's a pretty standard anisong and not a particularly unique sound in her discography. It's not even particularly tailored for concerts - it doesn't have the singing along parts from POWER GATE, the iconic yells from DISCOTHEQUE or Zankou no Gaia, or even a parapara, and yet it still gets a huge response whenever it's performed.
Not that it shouldn't; it's a great song. It just never would have struck me as staple material if I had been listening to Nana's songs without any prior knowledge.

Yea, personally I've found myself no so overly attached to her staples... especially POWER GATE in which iMO the melody doesn't have much specialty in it. But that's my own opinion and it's a fact those are extremely popular. Same with eternal blaze although I wouldn't deny I liked it when I was watching Nanoha and thought it had fit.

I'm SO glad someone made this post. I completely agree 100% and I think I've complained before that it'd be nice to leave this out of concerts sometimes. It got annoying when I bought the Live Circus DVD and all three concerts have this song in it, when there's so much older material that's better and has been neglected. It's a nice song though, I just think it's overdone to death. I've thought a lot about this and I think the reason it's a staple is: 1. It's her first single with Elements Garden 2. It was a very successful single and I guess the "starting" point for many fans of Nana 3. It captures Nana's style very well, especially for future singles. Plus, in 2006, when this came out, it kind of blew anison fans away and was sorta something new. I can't really relate, but I wonder if other fans also have their first song of Nana (that made them a true fan) very close to their heart? Interestingly enough, the first album track with Elements Garden (I think?) is also a staple: Tears' Night. Though I understand that one because it's so amazing and pretty unique. Unlike ETERNAL BLAZE, which gets sorta old, Tears' Night is always fresh for me. I never get sick of POWER GATE too. Everyone else touched on everything else I wanted to say too

Just in response to that, Eternal Blaze & Orchestral Fantasia live videos sold me on her amazing singing talent and control (esp. the latter) but Innocent Starter hit me for just sounding so beautiful. It wasn't until Tenkuu no Canaria that I became a true die hard fan though.
I prolly spent 2 weeks just watching Live Formula bits on youtube and listening to some of her early songs like eternal blaze over and over because they were SO perfect.
Tears Night Live is probably one of my favorite songs that she ever performs live... @ Live Graces it blew me away, oh man. Its just a very dramatic song and a powerful one @ the same time.

for me i dont mind Eternal Blaze to be off the list.....but i think is for those who are not really fans of Nana......like i said during live viewing, they went really max high for just this song =.=;;; (i even heard some 1 hold 4 UO sticks in both hands n one in the MOUTH for this song wth.......)
same reason with stranger, i feel Eternal Blaze is getting old (but still in my fav).....i dont know y not so hardcore fans are still hardcoring that song so much than the other songs that Nana sang.......=.=; i hope they will be hyper for all songs and not that only Eternal Blaze in the coming concert in Singapore =.=.....
