Nishikawa Takanori’s solo project T.M.Revolution defined the 1990s with its synth rock pop songs before dominating ani-song in the new century with tracks for “Gundam SEED” and Capcom’s “Sengoku Basara” game series. Nana Mizuki likewise shifted her focus over the past decade from voice acting to singing, which led to her game-changing single “Phantom Minds” going on to become the first anime song to nab the top spot on the Oricon charts. The two hooked up last year to produce a pair of opening themes for the divisive mecha anime, “Valvrave the Liberator,” with music videos that are every bit as over-the-top as the show. “Kakumei Dualism” features a death match between a gladiator and an assassin in a Roman Colosseum inset with shots of Nana and Nishikawa screaming at each other between flaming chains, while “Preserved Roses” is set on a futuristic space station where Nana awakens Nishikawa from hyper-sleep to explode the on-board researchers into cubes with his psychic powers. Seriously. You get production values that you’d never see in an ani-song video with tropes from your favorite anime. What’s not to love?
