So we've had more than 4 months to listen to the latest 2012 Nana songs and I think we've had some time to reflect on what was overall an entertaining year.
For me, 2012 could be split into two eras. Pre-Rockbound Neighbours, and Rockbound Neighbours.
Near the beginning of the year, we started with a bang with Synchrogazer. In Synchrogazer, we got a unique song, a style different from anything Nana has done, yet it was still clearly identifiably Nana. We got a sexy music video, and hey, the song sounds damn good too. Always a bonus! And the song has a sweet name. What's Synchrogazer? Is it like... big brother gazing over all of us simultaneously. It has kind of a futuristic feel and the sound and video of the song has a very advanced futuristic feel, so despite the name being weird, it kinda works. Overall, the single was solid, but Synchrogazer was such a neat song that it overshadowed its sisters, Love Brick and Risoron - both nice songs (in the case of Risoron, I might even go as far as saying it was great)
Later in the year (probably around May), we got a sample of Jiku Sapphire in the form of a candy commercial. After almost half a year of inactivity, we started getting excited once again, and we all giggled at what a cool name "Time Space Sapphire" was. In Time Space EP, we got a nice mix of songs. We got three songs that were all different from one another in style. Oh wait, we got four songs. I, and probably all of you, forgot about the existence of One.
Soon.... and I mean very soon after that, Bright Stream was announced and the sample released. If memory serves correctly, Bright Stream's sample was released before Time Space EP was out, or atleast it was close. Whoaaa, Nana so busy. We soon forgot about the half year long Nana drought, rejoicing over all the content that we were getting, worrying about Nana burning out and working too hard, giving us too much stuff over the course of the year.
If there's one word to describe Bright Stream as a single, it would be safe. All of the songs had a very standard anime feel to them, which is not a bad thing. Not at all. In fact, we gobble up this typical anime stuff and this style is likely what got Nana popular in the first place. To get a better idea of how safe this single was, look at the titles of the songs! Bright Stream, Fearless Hero, Sacred Force. All sensical, descriptive titles. Adjective-Noun. The Noun is what the song is about, and the Adjective describes that noun. Perfectly sensical. What's SpaceTime Sapphire about?
And thus ends Nana's flurry of activity regarding singles. And now, we enter into the next wave of songs.
To commemorate Nana's 12 anniversary as a singer, there was to be an album released on 12/12/12. How convenient that the stars (erm... the days) aligned in such a way to make this work. In these very forums, we played a fun game where we would try to guess the title of the album. We would go to a random word generating website and generate 2 words randomly. We had a lot of fun coming up with a list of possible titles, but we soon realized what a futile effort it was to try to guess the titles of Nana's albums/singles.
After coming up with dozens of possible random titles, she owned all of us with the title "Rockbound Neighbours." Never in a million tries would we have come up with something so awesome. It's like... the rocker image is kinda intimidating. Nana totally rocks, but is definitely not an intimidating, imposing presence. She rocks, but she wants to rock in the friendliest way possible, thus "Rockbound Neighbors."
We got some previews. Lovely Fruit was really cute but I personally was (and currently am) not a big fan of. We got a brief preview of Linkage via Unchain Blades DS game preview, and it was sweet and left us wanting more (and as it turns out... more we certainly got). We got Darling Plastic, which most of us were somewhere between "meh" and "alright" on. Kiseki no Melodia... well, it had organs, what more can I say? Get my drift? was well... really hyper. It was really short, but so energetic that if they made the song any longer, Nana may have collapsed from being over-energetic. Wait a minute... waaaaaait. You WANT us to bind you, Nana? Nooooo, please don't start doing THOSE kinds of videos.
So wow, the album's not even out and we've heard half of it. I just felt bad for the few that were waiting for the full release, and refused to download the songs individually. I mean, I wouldn't feel so bad normally, but they actively participated in discussions and the rest of the forum was constantly reminded of how much gruesome pain these individuals were in.
Then the album came out, and the consensus was that it was a good album. Consistent was the word most used to describe it. Every single song was atleast pleasant. For many of us, it wasn't a favourite, as it doesn't have Orchestral Fantasia in it, and an album with no Orchestral Fantasia in it be default loses to one that does. Personally, RockNei WAS my fav, and the lack of Orchestral Fantasia was made up for by the presence of Crown of Avalon.
And now, we arrive at this point, where we all stake our lives and pride on the line in a competition to see whose favourite songs is the best. Remember all; One, Happy Go Ground and Yakusoku exists, so don't forget to consider those options into your calculations
